Overview
A Belfast-based furniture design firm approached Windsor Displays to integrate digital signage into a custom line of desks they were designing for a client.
The objective was to seamlessly embed screens into these desks, enhancing the furniture’s functionality while maintaining a sleek aesthetic. These formed the check-in reception desks in Belfast’s ICC, Northern Ireland’s international convention centre in the heart of Belfast.
The Project Requirements
For bespoke digital signage projects, it’s essential to ask thorough questions to ensure the design aligns with both the client’s vision and technical needs and the manufacturer warranty specifications. Windsor Displays, as a digital signage integrator, carefully assess the project’s environment and requirements to ensure compliance with the screen manufacturer’s installation standards.
Key Considerations and Design Process
The Windsor team collaborated closely with the furniture designers, reviewing desk designs and schematics to determine the best integration approach. The main questions and considerations were:
Screen Mounting Options
Would the screens be rear-mounted with an aperture, or front-mounted directly onto the desk's front panel?
Did the client have specific preferences for mounting brackets, and would an extra-slim mount be needed to achieve the desired look?
Technical and Environmental Factors
What was the depth available within the desk for the screen and mount?
How much ambient light was expected in the installation environment, and would a high-brightness screen be necessary?
Was the rear of the desk closed off, would air ventilation be required to prevent overheating?
Was there power and data infrastructure in place for each screen location?
Additional Enhancements
Would tempered glass screens provide extra durability and an aesthetic touch?
After evaluating these factors, the decision was made to use high-brightness 700cd screens, which would ensure visibility in the well-lit reception area. The screens would be rear-mounted within the desk structure, allowing for a clean, professional appearance. Ventilation gaps were also incorporated to ensure adequate airflow and prevent overheating during extended usage.
Content Management Flexibility
The client requested an easy, user-friendly approach to content management. Initially, they planned to load content onto the screens via USB, but Windsor Displays recommended designing the setup with the potential to upgrade to a Content Management System (CMS) for remote control and updates in the future. This allowed for a practical, immediate solution while offering flexibility to update to CMS for future proofing.
Project Execution and Outcome
Windsor Displays suggested a set of seven integrated digital signage units, which were then delivered to Belfast. The screens were installed by Bespoke Rooms Furniture into the reception desks, providing the client with a modern, functional space that combines aesthetic appeal with dynamic digital capabilities.
The result is a reception area equipped with digital signage that can be updated easily, enhances customer interaction, and complements the high-quality, custom furniture design.
This project showcases the potential of digital signage in bespoke furniture applications, providing a seamless blend of form and function.
